Fibromyalgia is one of the more insidious conditions as it causes a great deal of pain, yet there is no cure. Around the world, thousands of people are currently living with this medical condition.

What is Fibromyalgia?

Fibromyalgia is a disorder that consists of having tender points along the body. It can cause depression, fatigue, disruptions of sleep and mood changes that can alter a person’s entire outlook. It can even affect memory as well.

There is no known cause of fibromyalgia and it seemingly affects people at random. This means that no matter your fame or fortune, fibromyalgia may strike with no warning.

There are a number of celebrities and famous people who have been struck by fibromyalgia. What follows are just a few who have managed to strive through the effects of this conditions and live normal lives.

Florence Nightingale: A true pioneer in the health field during the 19th century, Nightingale (pictured at top) wrote about the health conditions of patients that she treated in the Crimean War. Her book is considered a landmark in the field of healthcare. However, she contracted fibromyalgia due to an infection and by 1896 she was bedridden from the condition.

Michael James Hastings: Arguably best known for the role of Captain Mike from “The West Wing”, Michael (pictured above) was forced to retire from show business due to his fibromyalgia. Today, he has become a spokesperson for this disorder and he continues his educational career in pursuing a PhD in Educational Technology.

Rose Hamlin: Lead singer of Rosie and the Originals, she became a favorite of popular musicians such as John Lennon. However, her struggles with fibromyalgia were such that she was forced to retire from touring and chart a new course as a painter.


Sinead O’Connor

Sinead O’Connor: The Irish-born Grammy winning singer once dominated the charts in the late 80s and early 1990s, including her hit single, “Nothing Compares to You”. However, the pain caused by fibromyalgia caused her to retire from music in 2003. Today, O’Connor (pictured above) has managed to power through her condition which still affects her on a daily basis and has resumed her musical career.

Susan Flannery: A four-time Emmy winning actress, Flannery was one of the queens of the daytime soap opera scene on her show, “The Bold and the Beautiful”. However, in 2007 Flannery had to take time off her show in order to deal with the effects of fibromyalgia. Shortly afterwards she returned to the program to resume her role. Today, she still struggles with the condition on a day to day basis.

Although there is no cure for fibromyalgia, there are a number of treatments that include painkillers, eating a healthy diet and establishing proper sleep patterns that create a more comfortable condition for those who are afflicted.
