Famous People with Depression

Every man, woman and child in the world can suffer from depression. It is not primarily a psychological disorder. It is not an incurable problem which one has to be scared of. There is no social stigma attached to it which should compel you to feel embarrassed of yourself.

John Lennon
It is nothing unnatural to have depression. To the contrary, if you have never experienced depression then you are one of the few.

Depression is a state of mind that is overwhelmed or taken over by sadness, anxiety, paranoia in some cases, fear, disappointment, frustration, bereavement or low self esteem among others. The mild form of depression is sadness or melancholy while the severe form is referred to as a depressive disorder.

Many famous people and celebrities have suffered from depression and given the fact that they have emerged as more popular than ever before establishes the reality that depression is not only natural but is also curable (or at least manageable) and you can hope for the better. Britney Spears suffered from a major depressive disorder which is much worse than normal depression. She went to extremes when her life, certain people and certain situations didn’t turn out as she had wanted.

We Shall Overcome …

After she got treated successfully, she emerged as the sensation that the world knew her for during her teens and young adult days. Many say that Mark Twain wouldn’t have been able to write the classics had he not experienced depression. He is not the only famous writer to have had depression, there are many more.

The reason why their success post depression is being highlighted is because it goes on to show that depression is not only natural but also manageable, curable and you can have a better life than what you ever had once you overcome depression.

Mark Twain

Celebrities like Oprah Winfrey, Woody Allen, Christian Bale, Halle Berry, Jim Carrey, Marilyn Monroe and dozens of other famous people and celebrities have had depression. Many of them have suffered from depression on more than one occasion. You cannot avoid depression because you are human and you have emotions, you will get hurt when things go very wrong, when you lose someone dear and when life seems to be topsy-turvy but you can overcome depression and aspire for a life that you have always dreamt of.

Ingmar Bergman, a legendary Swedish director, who has inspired generations of filmmakers in the world, suffered from depression many a time in his life but he channeled it through his work and his films are nothing but masterpieces.

And of course powerful and political men such as Abraham Lincoln, John D. Rockefeller and T. Boone Pickens, Jr. had also experienced depression.

Abraham Lincoln

There are many types of depression and there are many names in the medical jargon but essentially depression is something that people in general have to deal with no matter their social status or economic level.
